Jan and Michèle

We are classroom teachers and literacy specialists who have spent most of our lives teaching children to read. Jan trains teachers and reading specialists throughout America. Her best-selling books , The Next Step in Guided Reading (Scholastic, 2009) and The Next Step Forward in Guided Reading (Scholastic, 2016), has helped thousands of teachers learn how to teach guided reading. Michèle is an early literacy consultant and author for Pioneer Valley Books. She has written Word Solvers: Making Sense of Letters and Sounds (Heinemann, 2002) and over 400 fiction and nonfiction books for beginning readers.

Our experience as reading specialists and Reading Recovery® Teacher Leaders has taught us the importance of helping children develop a literacy processing system that includes reading, writing, and word study activities. We are convinced that most reading difficulties can be addressed and even prevented through high-quality small group and individual instruction.
