LETTER-SOUND ASSESSMENT
Directions:
Ask each student to read the 26 uppercase and lowercase letters as they appear on the screen. Then ask each student to tell you the sound each letter makes. The goal is to discover which letters and sounds a student knows so you can prepare their letter bag for the Beginner Steps lessons.
Step 1: Letter Names
Ask each student to read the 26 uppercase and lowercase letters as they appear on the screen. Say to the
student:
I am going to show you some letters. Tell me the names of the letters you know. Press the checkmark for
each correct response and the - for each incorrect response.
Step 2: Assess letter sounds (optional)
Each lowercase letter will repeat. Have the student say the letter sound for each letter that appears on the
screen. Press the √ for each correct response and the - for each incorrect response.
If you are assessing a student remotely with Zoom, use the advanced share and position your screen to display only the letters and not the scoring portion of the screen. At the end of the assessment, you will be able to print out a complete list of the letters the student identified.
