The instructional model

Why small-group instruction
changes everything

Small-group instruction allows teachers to meet readers exactly where they are — adjusting in real time, observing closely, and teaching each reader what they need next.

Responsive to every reader

With 4–6 students in a group, teachers see every reader clearly — what they can do, what they're working toward, and how to move them forward. No student hides in a small group.

Discussion builds thinking

Text-based discussion is built into every lesson. Students don't just read — they talk, think, and respond. This is how comprehension deepens beyond the surface of the text.

Consistency across the day

Every LFP component uses the same strategies and language — so students hear one consistent message about reading from their classroom teacher, their intervention teacher, and their read-aloud.

Inside every lesson

A lesson structure built for
comprehension

1
Word study · 2–3 min

Word study warm-up

Every lesson includes targeted word study — phonics patterns and vocabulary taught in the context of the books students are reading, not in isolation.

2
Book introduction · 2–3 min

Set a comprehension purpose

Before students open the book, the teacher activates prior knowledge, introduces key vocabulary, and sets a comprehension focus — giving every reader a purpose and a lens before they begin.

3
Reading & discussion · 8–10 min

Read, think, and discuss

Students read with teacher support. The teacher observes, prompts for meaning, and pauses at key moments for text-based discussion — supporting fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary together.

4
Written response · 3–5 min

Respond in writing

Students respond to what they read through purposeful writing — consolidating comprehension, strengthening the reading–writing connection, and building writing stamina lesson by lesson.
